New data reveals emotional impact of type 2 diabetes, showing encouragement as key to better outcomes
Abbott has released data from its FreeStyle Libre Report, titled ‘The Power of Positive Motivation for Type 2 Diabetes Management,’ focusing on the emotional and motivational factors influencing Canadians with type 2 diabetes.
With nearly 12 million Canadians affected +by diabetes or pre-diabetes, most have or will develop type 2 diabetes. Often associated with controllable lifestyle factors like diet and exercise, type 2 diabetes is accompanied by emotional challenges.
The report emphasizes the profound impact that perception, words, and actions have on those living with the condition.
The report’s findings reveal that type 2 diabetes frequently brings emotional strain, with 25 percent of Canadians with diabetes reporting stress and 21 percent experiencing anxiety related to their condition.
Positive reinforcement is crucial in managing type 2 diabetes. In the report, majority of Canadians (80 percent) say encouragement from healthcare providers aids their management efforts.
Furthermore, 67 percent agree that support from friends and family is beneficial. Additionally, 41 percent appreciate receiving guidance and direction from their healthcare providers.
The study highlights the value of sensor-based glucose monitoring tools, such as Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre systems.
According to the data, 82 percent of users find these tools help them understand how lifestyle choices affect their diabetes, while 77 percent report that the real-time information from these devices keeps them motivated in managing their condition.
“When it comes to diabetes management, we know there is power in encouragement,” stated Michael Vallis, a health psychologist specializing in motivation and psychosocial adaptation for chronic conditions.
“Our supportive words, paired with the real-time feedback offered by tools like flash glucose monitoring systems, can give our loved ones a boost and help them feel like their diabetes goals are achievable.”
The report offers recommendations from experts, including Vallis, to support Canadians with diabetes.
These include practising empathetic listening, leading with positivity, and promoting the use of supportive tools like Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 2 system, which provides real-time health feedback.
The recommendations are aimed at maintaining motivation and helping individuals manage their health journey effectively.
“By highlighting the experiences of those with type 2 diabetes and providing effective solutions, we strive to enhance the health and wellbeing of millions across the country who are on their journey to better health,” noted Luz Herrera, general manager of Abbott’s diabetes care business in Canada.
