Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley has promised to protect pensions if her party wins the provincial election set for May 29. She revealed she is committed to staying in the Canada Pension Plan. The proposal to develop an Alberta Pension Plan and withdraw from the Canada Pension Plan was raised in the 2020 ‘Fair Deal Panel’ report. It was formed to determine if the province was getting a fair shake when it came to numerous federal policies. A referendum, to vote for or against withdrawing from the Canada Pension Plan and creating the Alberta Pension Plan, was proposed and the government, the United Conservative Party, says a province-wide referendum on the issue could come as soon as next year, if they form the government again. While there’s no public release date for a consultant’s report examining the costs and benefits of a provincial pension plan, the government says is now being tweaked with more recent data. However, the government suggests the draft report is “favourable” to Alberta going it alone.
