Canada Post processes backlog after strike as delays loom into 2024

Canada Post is resuming normal operations following a month-long strike, according to the Financial Post.

The postal service announced it has started accepting commercial letters and parcels and plans to begin processing new international mail on December 23.

However, delays are expected to continue into the new year as the backlog of mail is addressed.

Mail is being processed on a first-in, first-out basis, Canada Post confirmed.

Over 55,000 employees were ordered back to work by the Canada Industrial Relations Board after it determined that a new agreement could not be reached before year-end.

The strike resulted from stalled negotiations between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW).

Federal mediation failed to resolve disputes over key issues such as wages and weekend service expansion.

In response, the government has established an industrial inquiry commission to develop recommendations for a new agreement.

The commission’s findings are due by May 15, while existing contracts have been extended until May 22.
