Meet the retired journalist reshaping the retirement dialogue

HomeEquity Bank has appointed Peter Mansbridge as its strategic communications consultant as part of its campaign to reshape the dialogue surrounding retirement and promote its CHIP Reverse Mortgage program. HomeEquity Bank is a portfolio company of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board.

Mansbridge, a retired journalist and author, previously worked with HomeEquity Bank for the video series, In Conversation with Peter Mansbridge.

In the series, Mansbridge interviewed Steve Ranson, president and CEO of HomeEquity Bank, and Yvonne Ziomecki-Fisher, executive vice president of HomeEquity Bank, on reverse mortgages, ageing in place, and methods for affording retirement at home.

With the series’ success helping in the campaign’s launch, the retired journalist continues to work with the bank in reshaping dialogues about retirement opportunities through his new role.

“I've made a career challenging the status quo by asking the right questions, and I've recently become quite familiar with the word 'retirement’. For many people, circumstances have changed,” he said.

“A lot of people, according to Statistics Canada, want to continue doing some kind of work, well beyond the traditional retirement age. I know a bit about that myself. My goal is to help Canadians consider what questions to ask if they are working out how to meet these goals,” said Mansbridge.

Data from Statistics Canada found that more than half (55 percent) of Canadians that were planning to retire soon wanted to continue working part-time, while more than a third (38 percent) wanted to get into more interesting work in their retirement.

“People aged 55 and above will account for a third of Canada's population by the end of 2024, leaving many with questions about what the future of retirement looks like,” said Ranson.

“As Peter says, retirement can be whatever you choose to make it. We want to give more Canadians the tools to have these conversations and consider all their options so they can retire on their terms,” he added.

“Planning for retirement can be very personal, and many people understandably don't always know how to evaluate what's right for them," said Vivianne Gauci, senior vice president, customer experience and chief marketing officer at HomeEquity Bank.

“We're proud to be collaborating with one of the most trusted interviewers in Canada to help guide and empower people to live the retirement of their dreams with confidence,” she added.

The bank’s campaign begins with the launch spot “Ask Yourself” which will run on television, digital, and social media beginning January 8.
