Port of Montreal faces 24-hour halt as longshore workers press for progress in stalled negotiations
Dockworkers at Montreal's port will launch a 24-hour strike starting Sunday morning, aiming to escalate pressure on management amid a prolonged labour dispute, as reported by BNN Bloomberg.
Representing close to 1,200 longshore workers at Canada’s second-largest port, the union issued formal notice on Thursday for this complete work stoppage.
This strike follows an overtime strike that began two weeks ago, as well as a three-day walkout at two container terminals earlier in the month.
Negotiations remain stalled, with previous federal efforts to intervene, including an attempt by the labour minister to pause work stoppages and appoint a special mediator, failing to advance talks.
The Maritime Employers Association has argued that the union’s actions disrupt operations and harm the port’s reputation.
They reiterated their hope for a negotiated settlement but noted that after 35 mediation sessions over 15 months, negotiations remain deadlocked.
