The firm adds leadership in Canada to focus on institutional partnerships and consultant engagement

Ninety One has appointed Samantha Cleyn as head of Institutional, Canada.
Cleyn has more than two decades of industry experience. She previously worked at BMO Global Asset Management as managing director, head of Institutional Sales and Service, where she led a 10-person institutional distribution team and oversaw the firm’s Canadian institutional business.
Before that, she was vice president, head of Institutional, Canada at T. Rowe Price, responsible for business development and executing the institutional strategy.
Cleyn also worked as a senior investment consultant and principal at Mercer Canada Ltd.
According to Cleyn’s LinkedIn profile, she has led nearly 2000 investment manager meetings and around 250 manager search projects across global asset classes.
She has worked with institutional clients, including Indigenous governments, wealth management programs, foundations, insurers, and pension plans.
Ninety One continues to expand its North American operations with hires across business development, investment, and operations.
Recent appointments include Sangeeth Sewnath, managing director and head of the Americas; Katherine Tweedie and Dana Hildebrandt as co-heads of North America Institutional Client Group; and Marilyn Rowland as director of Consultant Relations.
In November 2024, Tweedie discussed with Benefits and Pensions Monitor that Canadian investors were shifting from domestic fixed income to global multi-asset credit for better returns.
She highlighted emerging market debt as a valuable diversification tool despite challenges from a strong US dollar and higher interest rates.
Cleyn will be based in Montreal, Quebec.
She will work with the Canadian team to oversee commercial development, focusing on relationships with public and corporate pension plans, foundations, endowments, insurance firms, and wealth platforms. She will also engage with global and local consultants.
