A new survey launched on World Thrombosis Day aims to raise awareness of thrombosis-related conditions in women
October 13 is World Thrombosis Day, a global initiative created by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH).
This campaign engages the general public, healthcare providers, and policymakers to raise awareness about blood clots, focusing on the signs, symptoms, risk factors, and prevention. The campaign addresses the alarming statistic that one in four deaths worldwide are linked to thrombosis-related conditions.
This year's focus is on women's health, launching a new global survey aimed at understanding women’s awareness of their risk for blood clots. The survey targets key life stages such as pregnancy and postpartum.
Available in eleven languages, the survey seeks to maximize accessibility and encourage global participation. The information collected aims to improve outcomes for women at risk of developing blood clots during these critical stages of life.
Blood clots in the legs and lungs, commonly referred to as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), together make up venous thromboembolism (VTE).
VTE is the third leading cause of cardiovascular death worldwide. World Thrombosis Day is dedicated to educating the public about VTE, with particular attention to the unique risks women face.
“Understanding the risks of blood clots is crucial, as one in four people die worldwide from conditions caused by thrombosis. Raising awareness about VTE can ensure better care for those at risk,” said Lana Castellucci, chair of the World Thrombosis Day Steering Committee.
“This year, we are particularly focused on women's health and thrombosis. By gathering data through this survey, we aim to understand women's experiences with VTE education during pregnancy and postpartum and hope to empower women with knowledge and improve health outcomes for themselves and their families.”
In partnership with more than 6,000 organizations, the campaign has implemented impactful initiatives worldwide.
World Thrombosis Day has also collaborated with corporate supporters such as The Bristol Myers Squibb Pfizer Alliance, Cardinal Health, Inari, Leo Pharma, Penumbra, Regeneron, and Viatris to strengthen the campaign's reach in 2024.
